Waterproofing a Swimming Pool: Materials, Methods and Best Practices

By MK Dhawan  ·  June 10, 2026  ·  Expert Analysis

A swimming pool that leaks is not just a nuisance — it can undermine the surrounding structure, waste thousands of litres of treated water daily, and create damp conditions that damage adjacent buildings. Getting pool waterproofing right from the start is critical.

Why Pool Waterproofing is Unique

Unlike roofs or basements, a swimming pool must contain water under positive hydrostatic pressure while also resisting the aggressive chemistry of chlorinated water. The waterproofing system must bond to concrete under both wet and dry conditions, resist UV exposure in splash zones, and remain flexible enough to accommodate the pool’s slight movement over time.

Best Waterproofing Systems for Swimming Pools

1. Cementitious Crystalline Waterproofing

Applied as a slurry to the concrete surface, crystalline systems penetrate the concrete and form crystals that block pores and capillaries permanently. Ideal for new pool construction. Brands: Sika Crystalline, MC Bauchemie, Xypex. Self-healing property — crystals reactivate if new cracks form.

2. Polymer-Modified Cementitious Coating

Two-component flexible coating that provides an excellent waterproof layer over concrete. Applied in 2–3 coats. Compatible with pool tiles and finishes. Popular in India due to cost-effectiveness and ease of application. Products: Dr. Fixit Newcoat, Fosroc Nitoproof.

3. Polyurethane Lining Systems

For exposed or decorative pools, PU lining systems provide a seamless, chemical-resistant surface. Suitable for infinity pools, feature pools, and commercial aquatic facilities. Higher cost but superior performance and aesthetics.

Critical Details: Joints and Penetrations

The most common pool leakage points are construction joints, pipe penetrations, and wall-to-floor junctions. These must be treated with flexible sealant and reinforcing fabric before applying the main waterproofing system. Skipping this step is the number one cause of pool waterproofing failure.

Waterproofing Existing Pools

Existing pools with active leaks or failed waterproofing can be remediated from the inside (negative side) using crystalline systems or polymer coatings. All old paint and loose material must be removed, cracks chased and filled, and the substrate thoroughly cleaned before reapplication.
